This is New Albion on Mars
00:36
Far Canal is the initial cut-and-cover tunnel made
by expeditions to Mars, the precursor of
00:42
the Ways that compose New Albion today.
00:46
It's much shorter and narrower,
with less headroom than later Ways,
00:50
and doors to it are kept normally closed.
00:54
The 2 kilometre long, open, circulating water-way
that kept early expedition members alive is now
01:01
used mostly for training and maintained
as an emergency fall-back.
01:07
The tunnel is not particularly inviting to visitors.
01:11
Most lighting in Far Canal is optimised
for the organisms -
01:14
ranging from bacteria to small fish -
in the slowly circulating water.
01:20
Far Canal houses many strings of mycoprotein vats
which also sustained early human expeditions.
01:28
Unlike the rest of New Albion, Far Canal's workshop
is not separated from the rest of
01:33
the inhabited space, supplementing
the rich olfactory experience.
01:40
The name "Far Canal!" is understood to have
been suggested by expedition members
01:45
as they took their first breath in their new home.
