Closed but also open
We're not a perfectly closed system, there are leaks and inputs.

- This is New Albion on Mars
- 00:36
- New Albion isn't a perfectly closed system.
- 00:39
- There is regular movement of people, vehicles, and
- materials in and out of New Albion's outer ports.
- 00:46
- Whenever New Albion opens a door or duct to the
- atmosphere of Mars,
- 00:51
- small quantities of material - mostly gases and
- vapours - are lost from New Albion.
- 00:58
- Accidental leaks also from time to time leak through
- New Albion's envelope, until they're fixed.
- 01:05
- New Albion continually replenishes material lost
- through leaks in the same way as
- 01:10
- most of its internal space is originally
- filled after envelope construction.
- 01:17
- Our industrial areas process raw material from the
- surface of Mars into vital substances,
- 01:22
- including air and water.
- 01:25
- Many gases are stored compressed in large
- quantities as a 'cushion' against habitat leaks.
- 01:32
- A large off-line reservoir of water ensures ample
- supply in case of emergency.
- 01:39
- A great deal of what would normally be 'spoil' from
- mining activity is used inside New Albion as
- 01:45
- aggregate for soil and heavy construction materials
- where appropriate.
- 01:51
- We don't so much mine for rare resources, as
- convert as much as possible of the Martian surface
- 01:56
- into essentials for our habitat.
- 02:01
- At New Albion, mining is life.
