- This is New Albion on Mars
- 00:36
- New Albion is a series of parallel linear habitats,
- 00:39
- or "Ways", built on the floor of an opencast mine.
- 00:44
- Each Way is about 10 kilometres long,
- 00:46
- an arch in section about 20 metres wide internally and
- 00:50
- 20 metres high along the centre line.
- 00:54
- The arch walls are internally insulated and airtight.
- 00:59
- The arches are covered externally with mining spoil
- 01:02
- for insulation (both heat and radiation) and
- 01:05
- for added protection against impacts.
- 01:10
- A Way is divided into compartments at 500 metre intervals
- 01:14
- by airtight doors which are normally open.
- 01:19
- Neighbouring Ways are connected by service doors which
- 01:21
- are normally sealed, but which can be opened for maintenance.
- 01:26
- The Ways are built on a gentle slope to aid drainage and air circulation.
- 01:32
- Air, water, power and drainage ducts also connect the Ways,
- 01:37
- each of which can be individually sealed if required.
- 01:43
- At the lower and upper end of each Way are normally-sealed
- 01:47
- doors to industrial compartments.
- 01:51
- These industrial compartments also offer access to the surface of Mars.
- 01:57
- A New Albion Way has much in common with a very large submarine!
