- This is New Albion on Mars
- 00:36
- Multiple whole compartments in each Way are
- dedicated to supplying fresh food.
- 00:42
- There are 3 main types of farming at New Albion:
- vertical farming, agriculture, and gathering.
- 00:51
- The vertical farming compartments are essentially
- high-tech factories packed around a passage
- 00:56
- through the middle of the compartment.
- 00:59
- These are entirely artificial environments,
- composed of smaller cells offering different
- 01:04
- environments to the various foodstuffs grown inside.
- 01:08
- All manner of vegetables, mushrooms, seaweeds, and
- some smaller freshwater and marine livestock
- 01:13
- are grown this way.
- 01:17
- Agriculture compartments contain mostly arable
- land for growing crops,
- 01:21
- and a little pasture for raising livestock.
- 01:25
- Farming compartments are very small compared to
- those on Earth,
- 01:28
- with an emphasis on manual and 'organic' practices.
- 01:33
- Neither harvests nor farms are large enough for
- supply of 'seasonal workers' or farm labourers to
- 01:38
- be a problem - occasional farm work
- qualifies as community service.
- 01:45
- Some conservation compartments also yield food,
- under the strict supervision of
- 01:49
- New Albion's ecologists.
- 01:52
- Plants, berries, nuts, and mushrooms are
- occasionally plentiful enough for gathering.
- 01:59
- Freshwater, marine, and densely-vegetated
- natural habitats may also provide the
- 02:04
- occasional larger animal for food, as a
- by-product of population control.
- 02:10
- We can't rely on imported food at New Albion!
