- This is New Albion on Mars
- 00:36
- The Library of New Albion has existed since
- the earliest days of the colony.
- 00:43
- Some of its first few artefacts - private
- handmade journals and illustrated
- 00:48
- children's stories on scrap paper bound
- with tape -
- 00:52
- are no longer available for borrowing but
- are on permanent display.
- 00:57
- Each Way has its own branch of the Library
- 01:00
- who will arrange inter-library
- loans if necessary.
- 01:05
- The stock of printed books is quite small,
- some of which are
- 01:10
- treasured possessions brought here from Earth.
- 01:13
- Unlike many Earth libraries, the Library
- of New Albion is also
- 01:18
- a comprehensive digital library. Digital
- artefacts above a certain age are
- 01:24
- no longer protected from enjoyment
- in any way.
- 01:28
- Audio and video recordings, datasets, texts
- or images of books considered of cultural
- 01:36
- value are imported into the Library and
- henceforth available for public 'borrowing'.
- 01:43
- Digital content is available from any
- library branch, but
- 01:47
- borrowing from the library
- must be done in person.
- 01:52
- The rule may seem perverse, but the
- intention is that borrowers entering
- 01:57
- the library are exposed to notices,
- other media, and to
- 02:02
- librarians who can help traverse
- our broad cultural heritage.
- 02:09

- 02:17
- [Dissonant clashing orchestral music]
- [Gustav Holst: Mars, the Bringer of War]

- [orchestral music continues]
